Maybe you have heard of PRP on the news and how it has helped athletes get better faster, well it’s not just for athletes. PRP is a revolutionary new treatment for musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, sports injuries or just plain over use.
PRP is best for chronic ligament and tendon sprains that have not responded to other treatment. The areas include rotator cuff injuries, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, knee sprains, patellar tendinitis, Achilles tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis among others. PRR is also effective in treating osteoarthritis, by smoothing the cartridge therefore reducing pain in the knee, hip and other areas.
PRP is a relatively easy procedure done in the office; it takes about 30-45 minutes total. First blood is drawn from the patient and placed in a special centrifuge to separate the red blood cells leaving pure platelets and plasma for injection. The plasma is then injected into the problem area. All of our injections are given using ultrasound guidance for the most accurate placement. You will be give information on what to expect, healing time and what medications to avoid for the first week. Discomfort depends on the area being treated; most will experience localized soreness and discomfort in which Tylenol can be taken. Patients often see results quickly; they experience a significant decrease in pain. PRP offers patients an alternative to more aggressive treatments, such as long term medications and surgery with the goal of restoring full mobility and function.
